"MOVEMBER"
- NOTHING WHATSOEVER ABOUT BUSES
Apologies in advance for publishing an article which is nothing whatsoever to do with buses. Whilst what I am about to say is primarily aimed at men (of all ages), I am aware that I have a number of ladies who are regular visitors to my site. Ladies, if you have a man in your life please take a few minutes to read what I am about to say. For those of you not already aware, it's “Movember”, the month formerly known as November. "Movember" is dedicated to growing moustaches and raising awareness and funds for men's health; specifically prostate and testicular cancer. I'm donating my top lip to the cause for 30 days in an effort to help change the face of men's health. My Mo will spark conversations, and no doubt generate some laughs; all in the name of raising vital awareness and funds for cancers affecting men. Why am I so passionate about men's health? The fight against male cancers is a cause very close to my heart. Currently one very close family member is being treated for prostate cancer. An elderly friend was last year successfully treated for prostate cancer, but sadly it now looks likely that a further elderly friend will be diagnosed with the same disease in the very near future. Prostate cancer is a disease that generally affects the more mature gentleman, but it can affect younger men as well. Some of you are already aware that earlier this year I had a prostate problem which required major surgery (despite only being 49 at the time). Thankfully everything was OK and I am now back to full health. Some time ago a work colleague in his mid twenties was diagnosed with testicular cancer, thankfully he was successfully treated so it shows it is not just older men who are affected. The facts below may provoke some thought: 1
in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime Since I was ill earlier in the year and especially since I have been growing my moustache in support of the campaign, many friends and colleagues have asked me how you tell if you have something wrong. Testicular cancer is usually diagnosed through identification of a lump or tenderness that was not there previously. The best person to find this is yourself, as you know best what is normal for your body and what is not. If you notice anything strange please go to the doctor and get checked out. Prostate cancer is somewhat different and you cannot feel a lump. First symptoms usually involve problems going to the toilet. Even with a full bladder you may notice that you have to try for a while before you can go. You might find you have to get up a number of times during the night rather than just once, or you go to the toilet and then need to go again very soon after. If you have any problems please get your self checked out. When I was ill the GP carried out a simple blood test and then arranged for me to see a consultant. The Consultant arranged a few tests before he said I needed surgery. Please support my campaign by going to the doctors if you suspect you have anything wrong. My consultant told me prostate cancer is one of the easiest cancers to cure, provided it is caught early. Alternatively if you feel you are able to make a donation to the charities anything you are able to give would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made by either donating online at: http://www.movember.com/m/1491652
(clicking on this link will take you to my Movember page) or you
can send a cheque made payable to “Movember, Gareth Jones Registration
Number 1491652” and post it to: If you'd like to find out more about the type of work you'd be helping to fund by supporting Movember, please take a look at the “Programmes We Fund” section on the Movember website: http://uk.movember.com/about Thank you in advance for supporting my efforts to change the face of men's health. I am now 12 days into the Mo growing and it is coming on OK. I will publish a photo at the end of the month showing the finished result. Saturday 12 November 2011 |

MODELS - UPDATE CORGI
OM41113B EAST LANCS WEST YORKSHIRE PTE - ERROR "I’ve just seen on the site the release photographs of 04111 3A and B the East Lancs PD3 in West Yorkshire PTE livery. When the original pictures were produced the bus carried the registration and fleet number of a Huddersfield Daimler not a Bradford PD3, and whilst the livery and destinations on the A version was correct, the B version was incorrect in both route number and spelling. The release images show that only half the errors have been corrected. I know I am not alone in having written to Corgi, (and yourself) pointing out the errors, including supplying to Corgi photographic evidence of the correct destination and timetable pages to prove that 80 was right and 25 wrong. At least the fleet number and registration correctly shows 2242 FKY242E which was one that received Metro green livery, many were scrapped still in Bradford blue, however the destination is still wrong. The original B model showed HOMEWOOD via HEATON and the model now shows HOLMEWOOD via Heaton, but the correct spelling is HOLME WOOD (two words). The route number should be 80. Route 25 ran from Bradford Moor to Saltaire and was operated by a different garage and was correctly shown on the Bradford blue Daimler East Lancs a few years ago. Due to Bradford having seven garages around the city, buses tended to live very parochial lives operating a limited number of services." I have forwarded Ken's email to Hornby and will let you know if I receive a reply. CLICK HERE to view a photograph of a sister vehicle to 2242 in the blue livery but showing the correct route number and destination. NEW
