LONDON
BUS MUSEUM - PRESS RELEASE The following press release and photographs have been received today from the London Bus Museum: London Bus Museum is pleased to announce details of this year’s limited-edition models by EFE for the annual Spring Gathering on 29 April: The models will be released for sale at 10am in the Museum Shop marquee at the event at Wisley Airfield. Each model will be priced at £15, or £13 to card-carrying LBPT Members. Due to the low production quantities, it’s possible that the models will sell out at the event but, should any stock be left at the end of the day, mail-order purchase arrangements will be announced on the Museum’s web-site at www.londonbusmuseum.com . Museum Members who volunteer to work at the event will be able to reserve their models in advance but this facility will not be available in other circumstances. For photographs and details of models see my News above dated 27 February - Gareth

OXFORD DIECAST BORISMASTER LAUNCH DELAYED Having announced with much fanfare two months ago that the first of London mayor Boris Johnson’s “new Routemasters” would enter service on Monday 20 February, Transport for London has now had to delay their introduction to service by one week, saying that certification of the vehicles has taken longer than expected. The first Borismasters are now expected to enter service with Arriva London on 27 February on route 38 from Victoria to Hackney. At the last count the project was costing £11.37million for design and development work, and the construction of eight prototypes by Wrightbus. The main design feature of the Borismaster which distinguishes it from existing hybrid buses is that it has three doors – for the first time on a British double-deck bus – which means that for much of the time it will have to bear the cost of a two-person crew. PHOTOGRAPHERS
BEWARE My subscription copy of Buses magazine March 2012 arrived in the post this morning. An article on page 23 in the John Aldridge column caught my eye: Photographers beware of restrictions when Borismaster reaches Victoria bus station "I do hope that somebody on high has a word with those running Victoria bus station before the first New Bus for London ‘Borismaster’ enters service on the 38 on 20 February. You may recall that a while ago the station was the scene of some anti-enthusiast behaviour including banishing one man because he was wearing a reflective jacket. I had thought that the fuss that resulted, plus questions in the London Assembly, had resolved matters, with wiser attitudes now prevailing. Sadly a letter from Miranda Crabtree, a customer service advisor, suggests otherwise. She says that photography is ‘recommended and acceptable’ when taken from a public place but is not allowed on Transport for London or bus operator- owned premises without prior permission. And she says it is not allowed in bus shelters either or inside buses. She goes on to talk about respect to these guidelines and the safety of bus passengers and drivers and adds that she hopes that my correspondent will continue his photographic documentation ‘in jest [sic) of the above guidelines’, whatever that means. Surely a bus shelter away from a bus station is a public place. A nice technicality at the moment is that buses on the 38 stand in Terminus Place, next to the bus station, and that is part of the public highway". Foot note: Since publishing this article early afternoon, Andrew Webb has written to me and advised that "The 38 is now back inside the bus station, Terminus Place being closed and turned into a construction site" - Gareth Thursday 16 February 2012 |
